OH MY GOD. We’re having a sleepover party. I am SO EXCITED!
That was me when I was 8.
When my child was 8 and saying that, I was more like, “oh.my.god. Not a sleepover party. She’ll be cranky all day the next day and then probably get sick right in time for school on Monday.”
Ok, but who cares about that? We’re totally throwing an amazingly awesome Sleepover party, ok? What’s the big deal about school anyway? Can’t they just learn everything on Youtube?
Plan the Party
My goal for you here is to plan a party that everyone will love without losing your ever loving mind. I want you to have a plan and I want it to be simple. And amazing.
Every party has four elements.
- Party Favors
That’s it. When it’s broken down like that, it’s a lot less overwhelming, isn’t it?
I’ve chosen a select list of ideas for each of those four categories. The idea is you pick a few, I say two or three from each category, and you’re going to achieve that simply amazing party.
Sleepover Party Food
Now the food for a sleepover can be just a teeny tiny bit tricky. You’re probably going to need something dinner-ish and obviously you’re going to serve some sweets.
But also obviously, you don’t want to go over board on the sweets. The least problem you will have with going overboard on sweets is sugar fueled mayhem.
The greatest problem you will have with going overboard on sweets is multiple vomiting 8 year olds with really long hair.
It’s not something you want to deal with, I promise. So I’m going to do my best to give you some balanced choices here, ok?
Popcorn is a perfect party food and especially great for a Sleepover party.
I love the idea of a “Popcorn Bar” from Mint Event Design because the popcorn sort of becomes an activity, too.
It’s interactive, DIY food which is always fun.
Pro tip, Be prepared to have popcorn everywhere. Your house will look like Fenway Park after a Red Sox game. Be ready with the Hoover.
Depending on what time your party starts, you probably want to have a “main” dish. Pizza is always a winner.
Make it a little extra special with something like this Build Your Own Pizza idea from Lauren Conrad.
Similar to the popcorn it’s fun and interactive. Also, customizeable! So every girl gets exactly the pizza she wants.
There’s a lot of food that happens at a Sleepover.
You are going to have to feed these kids in the morning, you know? Breakfast is a “comes with” for a Sleepover party.
Make it simple with this fairly easy Waffle Bar idea from the OT Toolbox. Use frozen waffles, no one will notice or care.
They will notice and care that you aren’t going mental try to make dozens of waffles from scratch on 3 hours sleep.
There are many things to love about this Chocolate Fruit Dip from Cooking Classy.
It’s got fruit. That’s healthy. It has chocolate. That’s delicious. It’s portable (no fork required)
It’s also pretty easy to do and it looks spectacular.
That is a lot of work for a simple fruit platter.
I almost forgot to include ice cream for this Sleepover Party. For shame.
Ok, honestly, I don’t really like ice cream. I know, you hate me now.
I love cookies and brownies and a million other terrible things, ok?
For your ice cream treat at your Sleepover party, you should try these Chipwiches from Serious Eats.
No one expects you to make this cake. I promise. If you can make this cake, good for you and also you should start a cake business.
If you love this Slumber Party Cake from Brooklyn Limestone, then you should take a picture to your baker and see if they can replicate it for you.
Because it’s that cute. You need that cake.
Sleepover Party Decor
Oh, you didn’t know you should do Sleepover Party Decor? You totally should.
How many sleepover parties do you throw in a year? Probably not more than 1. Because it takes about 364 days to recover from one.
So let’s go all out here, ok?
If you can pull off a blanket fort like this one from Lynzy and Co then you definitely should.
It’s crazy cozy and the kids will love it. Be prepared for it falling down and also for some kids not wanting to sleep in it.
This one is definitely best for a small party, but it looks like a lot of fun!
Balloons are a must have for every party in my opinion. The Slumber party is no different.
What’s great about balloons is the are cheap (for the most part, you might drop some cash on that “No Boys Allowed” balloon extravaganza) and they are easy.
They also have great visual impact and they are large scale. So you can cover a big space with some big wow factor. This Balloon Decor From Studio DIY is excellent inspiration for your Decor.
This one is almost a requirement for your Sleepover party decor.
This twinkly light idea from And Everything Sweet is perfect. This is pretty and functional.
You’re going to have a bunch of kids sleeping on the floor of your family. One or more of them is going to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. If they can’t see, they ARE going to step on every other child.
So go for the twinkly lights, ok?
How pretty is this food table from Love the Day?
I’m a sucker for navy blue. And owls.
And yeah, that banner is available as a free printable along with a few other cute things. Get over there and download it.
Not to overwhelm you or anything, but you probably want to decorate for breakfast, too.
I mean, it’s a part of the party. Yes there is a solid chance that the children will be zombies by the morning and won’t even notice.
But maybe a cute tablescape like this one from Paintchips & Cupcakes will make them human again.
The party invitation is the first hint at the decor of your party.
It’s the thing that gets people excited.
Oh! How cute is this invitation! Sally you are going to LOVE this party!
It’s like a little mini Hype Man for your party.
This Sleepover Party invite from Art & Chic will do the trick.
Sleepover Party Games & Entertainment
Sleepover games are probably not something the adults are going to plan.
I mean, you already know this. The best part of the sleepover are the quiet things the girls are going to be whispering to each other around 11pm.
But before they get to that, you should have a few things planned for them to pass the hours between 7-11pm.
We Heart Parties knows that a movie is a fantastic way to entertain the kids for a Sleepover party.
A slightly spooky movie is always fun, or you could even go for streaming a show on Netflix.
Do not be worried if the movie doesn’t completely hold their attention. It’s ok. Go with the flow.
Depending on the size of your sleepover crew, Game Night could be a great way to entertain your party goers.
If you’ve got a more than say 6 kids, though, this might not be the best option. It gets crowded at the game table.
Also, if you have more than 6 kids at the Sleepover Party, godspeed and may the odds be ever in your favor. It’s going to be a long night for you.
I love a photo booth at any party, but it’s definitely a must do for a Sleepover party.
This photo booth from Republic of Party is a great inspiration.
The kids will love this and will gravitate towards it all through the night as new ideas for posing pop into their minds.
I love these Personalized Pillow Cases from Chica Circle.
First of all, I couldn’t decide if they belonged in the Games/Entertainment section or the Party Favor section which means they are a Two-fer which I love. They are both entertaining AND the party favor you take home.
Win for everyone.
This is a fantastic game for a Slumber Party.
Toss and Talk from More than Elementary is a basic idea to get the girls chit chatting.
I imagine this one happening while the kids are starting to settle down for the night, but I also imagine this is where the fun really starts and will be what is most memorable for the kids.
What better idea could there be for a sleepover than to make a Dream Catcher from Taz & Belly.
Actually, my logic is only sound if anyone at the sleepover actually sleeps long enough to dream. Well, they will most definitely sleep the next night at home so this Dream Catcher craft is definitely useful.
And, bonus! It can be used as a party favor, too! Love me a two-fer!
Sleepover Party Favors
Yeah, we’re doing party favors at this Sleepover. Birthday or not, these girls are leaving with a swag bag, ok?
Is it a little much? Yes. It’s a lot much. Which is exactly why we’re doing it.
This is a Sleepover Party Favor that you are going to give out at the beginning of the party.
I know, weird, right? But this Cozy Socks idea from Jenny Cookies is meant to be enjoyed during the party.
This is totally brilliant to me because it’s fun and will get the girls chatting and excited, but they also go home with them the next day. Useful and memorable.
This manicure in a Mason Jar idea from The SOA Brand is fantastic. It’s fun, useful and includes a mason jar which is always a good thing.
I would be careful about the age group on this. Make sure the girls are old enough to be super careful with nail polish.
Or, fill it with some other less messy spa-like goodies! Like lip gloss.
I know what you are thinking.
Not happening! Who has time for that? You can’t make me.
Ok, you’r right this is going to take a little work and I can’t make you make Monogrammed Blankets from a Small Snippet.
But they are so cute! And memorable. And useful.
If you’ve done a spa night type sleepover, then why not send the girls home with some more spa stuff.
These DIY Bath Salts from Clean and Scentsible are perfect. I love homemade for a party favor.
And there’s a free printable label for you too!
This is one you donut want to miss.
Sorry. Terrible pun. That was worse for me than it was for you though, I promise.
But this donut theme lip balm from SImple Made Pretty is still an excellent idea ofr a sleepover party favor.
These girls are going to need naps after this sleepover.
Which means these Sleep Masks from Bombshell Bling are a perfect party favor!
Party With A Plan
Alright, you are as ready as you are ever going to be for a Sleepover party.
Don’t forget to take your vitamins. Eat your Wheeties. Brew the coffee extra strong.
It’s going to be a long night. Awesome. But long.
